This past September I had the rare privilege of attending the annual luncheon and camp outing of the V.F.W. # 10721, Minturn-Mount Holy Cross Post. These extraordinary men and women are all heroes who have served this great country in the military and then continued to contribute to their communities in a variety of ways. Some were teachers or engineers, while others were businessman. But the one thing they had in common, all were leaders, who led by example.
They had one more thing in common as well. They all had chosen to spend their post-military lives in the beautiful mountain towns and villages of the Colorado Rockies. They had done so in order to enjoy the opportunities that only the mountains can offer. Skiing, snowboarding, fishing, hiking and hunting were obviously important to this very fit and active group.
My wife Renee and I had a very enjoyable time interacting and getting to know this remarkable group. After spending some time at the archery range I was asked to give a short talk on my new book Admiral Eddie: The Story of America’s Greatest Naval Aviator, while they enjoyed a nice lunch. Many of the members purchased my book and had me sign it for them on the spot.
I want to thank these fine folks for their hospitality and support. I hope I can continue to meet and speak with other V.F.W. posts around the country in order to spread the word about Vice-Admiral Edward Orrick McDonnell. Because like these fine people of the Minturn-Mount Holy Cross Post, Eddie McDonnell was a hero that all of us should look up to and thank for our freedom and our country. Thanks again Post 10721. Hopefully I can return and talk about my next book in the years to come.
